After a few pints, Kneehigh’s Tristan Sturrock, who was about to become a father, fell off a wall in Padstow, broke his neck and was paralyzed from the neck down. Taken to hospital by air ambulance, he was presented with two choices – 18 months screwed into a neck brace or surgery which carried the risk of permanent paralysis – or worse.
This is both a play and a true account (and weaves in a ‘play’ on the two). It’s a personal and human story we can all vividly relate to – a life changing accident, the choice, the ‘what if’, the road to recovery – the effort, medical staff and family support, our NHS. The show really makes us feel for his situation – which whilst grave, is told with humour, clever use of props and lots of funny and moving moments - the operating table scene, the ‘performing’ surgeon, seeing the scan of his unborn baby, viewing his physical world through a mirror.
A vividly engaging one-man show with big story and small set – great for rural touring.
