Derevo - Mephisto Waltz. Assembly Roxy 15/8/12. Review by Esther @ Highlights

I love this company and their previous shows have blown me away, this one less so. Their performances are hugely visual, dark, intense, compelling, bleak and epic.  Their movement language is more animalistic than from identifiable techniques and styles. If there was a narrative, it was loose and I didn’t manage to follow it but that’s not the point with Derevo.

5 bald performers dressed in black and moving like bullying cajoling crows;  Armageddon fields of burnt looking flowers, beautiful effects,  scarecrows and birds nests, the chaos of gorged watermelons, food and mud smeared on the stage and the performers – and mixed with dry ice, kicked off a heavy stench. This was some kind of journey that finished where it started, lost me along the way and was pretty unsettling stuff. Even if you do get wrapped up trying to figure it out, you feel this show in your gut – and that’s great.

In no way for rural touring but great theatre.
