It felt a little odd entering this children’s performance, surrounded by but without our children, though we weren’t the only ones as I spotted an elderly couple up front on their own. Despite this, we did enjoy the show, though an hour felt a little too long.
The set was simple...a pile of cardboard boxes, but warmth, colour and character were added to a drab looking set by the performers (2). Mostly mimed, with occasional words, shrieks and squeaks, the differences and qualities of the two characters was obvious, with excellent facial expressions and actions (my favourite being the ‘shark attack’ scene). A few acrobatics were thrown in to add another dimension.
The scene with bubblewrap was quite ‘satisfying’ in the way that bubblewrap popping is (my own 2 children delighted in this activity the previous week). The children in the audience seemed entertained, with frequent laughter and permanent giggles from a little girl in the front row. Adults might find it a little tedious at times but then it’s not aimed at them.
As for rural touring I think it would be entirely suitable though as the theatre company is from Australia I couldn’t tell you if this is on the cards or not.
