Really strong three hander on anorexia. Brilliantly conceived, written and performed. No stranger to rural touring, Caroline Horton has created what would be a fantastic piece to tour, played with audience on three sides with a fairly simple set.
It engaged well with the audience from the outset, continually breaking through the fourth wall, undercutting conventions and using the music and the character of the musician to add an additional layer of humour to the piece. It was visually strong, following the journey of an anorexic through the stages of her illness and "recovery". It acknowledges that total recovery is not necessarily achievable, but also acknowledges that everyone has hang ups, phobias and mental states which come in and out of focus during their lives and that sometimes we deal with them better than at other times... and that is the "mess" we call life / the human condition.
I loved it and the audience at the Traverse loved it too!! (even at 10.30 in the morning!)- would love to see this piece on the rural touring circuit. Just hope it is not too pricey!
