Backhand Theatre 'Greek Myths for Kids' , C ECA , Fri 17 Aug 12, Review by Rosie Cross, Highlights

Review
The 3 actors worked really hard -  possibly tried too hard.   Do children always want ‘over the top’ manic enthusiasm as per Saturday morning TV?
On the whole the puppets didn’t work for me.  I liked Pegasus and his wings, but the other puppet characters weren’t very good.  And the 3 young operators didn’t understand that a puppeteer shouldn’t act or do faces (ie happy , sad, frightened)  for the puppet.

Good audience  involvement; and whilst there were a lot of words in the (often rather complex) stories, the children seemed well engaged.

Why is the work suitable or not suitable / ready for rural touring ?
Possibly . but not for me, because of the manic presentation
Why would you book them ?  or  Why wouldn’t you book them ?
Because it could have been more effective if they had been lower key
Why would it be worth pursuing this company to consider work in the future? Or not  ?
No

To be honest I went to see this show - and it was great - kids loved it and was a wonderful and accessible introduction to Greek myths. The reviews on the fringe website agree - perhaps you should ask children what they thought at the end?
