Review: The Wolves of Willoughby Chase

Name of company Not Cricket productions
Name of show The Wolves of Willoughby Chase
Genre Children's theatre
Venue C Soco
(CM)
Date 20 August
Set in dark, Victorian times, this period production tells the story of two cousins left in the manor house while their parents were away on a voyage.  The girls are left in the care of an evil governess against whom they fight strongly, in order to break free from her hold.  She was something of a Cruella de Ville character - who was determined to alter the family will and dispose of the girls and inherit their fortune.  The girls are sent to a local workhouse where they are similarly treated.  They fight to escape from their misfortunes.
The piece was visually interesting with a constantly changing flow of characters on stage and use of puppetry.  This was a large cast of approximately 14 characters and was possibly a youth theatre piece.
Problems with acoustics in the venue and sound meant that some of the dialogue was unclear – the lack of clarity may also have been partly due to the speed of the dialogue.
Suitable/ready for rural touring no, due to large cast
Would you book them no, not really
Would it be worth pursuing this company to consider work in the future - no, possibly not appropriate
