Review: The Seagull Effect

Name of company Idle Motion
Name of show  The Seagull Effect
Genre theatre
Venue Zoo Roxy
Date 20 August
This young cast performed an interesting piece which combined a story of young, troubled love against the backdrop of the great storm of 1987, which cut a swathe of destruction through the South East of England.  The central theme seemed to be about the interconnectedness of weather systems and indeed of all living things - (the seagull effect) which is not exactly a new concept.
Using projection of images, often onto white umbrellas - a simple device which worked surprisingly well, the company gently led the audience in and out of the  two intertwining themes.  Some unusual visual imagery was used – the girl disappearing into the middle of the bed as if into a swamp… the butterflies, the projection onto umbrellas and hands, however, certain devices felt a bit clunky to me (the mobile phone in the audience and that whole beginning section left me feeling slightly uncomfortable and patronised).
I was attracted to this piece as it had had some excellent reviews, however I came away ever so slightly disappointed with the overall presentation - I think I was expecting more innovative physical theatre, whereas the company did rely too heavily at times on the projected images, rather than using their own artistry to put over their point.

Suitable/ready for rural touring – possibly, yes, an interesting piece but perhaps too large a cast for rural touring.
Would you book them yes subject to cost and the above comment.

Would it be worth pursuing this company to consider work in the future yes

Any other comments an interesting company.  I would certainly look out for any future work.
