Review *** A site specific promenade piece centred in a music school where pupils are treated particularly harshly in the pursuit of excellence. David Paul Jones, the solo performer is an excellent musician and we are treated to a grand performance in the entrance hall at the start. The audience are then split into 3 to experience 3 different rooms, before regrouping to be taken upstairs for the indulgent finale. Grid Iron’s work is always unique and pushes boundaries and there are some genuine spooky moments during this production and times when the audience are challenged. The setting is spectacular and is a real showcase for some of the university’s old buildings. Personally I felt that there needed to be more content to the piece – I wanted more background, more story – the show could easily be extended for another 45 minutes without the audience tiring, you feel you are just getting started when it all ends. Although a one man show, the building was a key performer. If you took away the spectacular setting, I am not sure the production would work, but then the show was designed specifically for this building. It should be noted that I watched a preview performance and my understanding from the company is that the show has developed further – has anyone else watched it more recently? CA @ NEAT |
