Review *** Quite a physical piece, this looks at the life of patient HM who at the age of 30 had an operation on his brain to alleviate his epilepsy. This led to acute amnesia and this story is told through his Doctor who is on his way to ‘meet’ patient HM. You see the patient in the care home and see his relationship with the staff, and you also get flashbacks of his life before the operation. The set is quite a major component of this show and consists of a large frame, which doubles as projection screen, and is tracked up and downstage throughout the performance. It ‘wipes ‘ scenes and allows for resets, and although this action has a pertinent relevance which becomes obvious towards the end, it does dominate the show and I found it quite distracting and unnecessary at times. In saying that, the play was performed beautifully, and the tale while lacking at times in the narrative, was moving. The company used some innovative techniques in the staging, with the aforementioned moving screen which provided the backdrop for different locations through good use of projection, and projecting scenes through the use of a live camera filming actions happening in smaller detail elsewhere on stage. I felt that this was a high quality performance with strong production values, but if you stripped away the technology it would perhaps encourage the company to develop the human story more.
