Review A very strong & highly professional one – man performance. Malvolio, a strict puritan and not a likeable character, has lost all sense of human dignity and basic pride at the hands of malignant tormentors. It’s the story of one who has had madness thrust upon him. “I’m not mad” was a repeated refrain. The writing and the production relied heavily on making the audience feel very much ill at ease. Whilst the bones of the plot of “12th Night” were explained (and ridiculed), therefore it wasn’t necessary to have an in-depth knowledge of the original Shakespeare text, I didn’t know enough of “12th Night” to appreciate all the quotes which were slipped I to the script of ‘I Malvolio’. There was interaction with the audience, which served mainly to either mock or abuse them. The production requires an iron D shaped bar, suspended from an overhead bracket. (from which Malvolio throws a rope over it when he is preparing to hang himself.) Unlikely to have such overhead contraption outside of a bespoke theatre space. |
Suitable / ready for rural touring? | Yes – see comments below |
Would you book them ? | Maybe |
Would it be worth pursuing this company to consider work in the future? | Maybe |
Any other comments In a conversation with Gavin Stride afterwards, he explained that the show had been originally written for schools. Gavin assured me that Tim can adapt the show according to his audience. May be worth pursuing |
